UPSC Civil Service Selection process:

  • Preliminary examination: This is an objective type exam with two papers of 200 marks each.
  • Main examination: This is a written examination with seven papers of 200 marks each.
  • Interview: This is a personality test conducted by a board of experts.

UPSC Prelims Civil Services IAS Pre / Forest Service IFS syllabus

Both the UPSC Civil Services IAS Pre and Forest Service IFS examinations share the same syllabus for the Preliminary stage. It consists of two papers:

Paper I – General Studies (200 marks)

  • Current events of national and international importance: Includes current affairs, significant developments in India and around the world, and their impact.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement: Covers Indian history from ancient times to present, including the Indian independence movement and its leaders.
  • Indian and World Geography- Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World: Focuses on physical and social features of India and the world, economic activities and development, and geographical concepts.
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc. Covers the Indian constitution, political system, functioning of government institutions, local self-governance, public policies, and fundamental rights.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc. Deals with economic and social development concepts, poverty, inclusivity, demography, social sector initiatives, and sustainable development goals.
  • General issues on Environmental ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization: Covers basic understanding of ecology, biodiversity, climate change, and their implications.
  • General Science: Questions based on general scientific principles and applications across various fields.

Paper II – CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) (200 marks)

  • ComprehensionAbility to read and understand passages, draw inferences, and identify key points.
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability: Ability to analyze information, identify patterns, and solve problems logically.
  • Decision-making and problem-solvingAbility to make decisions based on available information and solve problems effectively.
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills and problem-solving: Ability to communicate effectively, work in teams, and resolve conflicts.
  • General mental ability: Basic numeracy (Class X level), data interpretation, and mental ability questions.
