PMA stands for Pakistan Military Academy. Established in 1947, it’s an officer training academy located in Kakul district of KPK. It is 2 years initial military training program that trained gentleman cadets well to join army & serve as a commissioned officer. During this training you are given various tasks. This course announce twice a year, usually May to June or in November to December. This course announces for intermediates or graduates who desire to become regular commissioned officer in military rank.

TCC stands for Technical Cadet Course. Its an engineering degree programme by Pak Army for selected candidate through affilated colleges of NUST. After completing intermediate education, most students aims to become officer in the Pakistan Army engineering corps and technical branches. The registration of this course announce one time every year mostly from December to March. This is the best opportunity of Pakistan Army that offered for 2nd year students. >> Army Medical Cadet Course:
It is one of the best opportunities provided by the Pakistan Army for medical students. However, you should keep in mind that even if you are admitted to one of Pakistan’s largest medical universities, you will have to pay fees to study there and will be required to pay another fee once you have completed your degree. If so, you will have to look for new jobs, but in the medical cadet program, students from the Pakistan Army are chosen according on their faith, and they have entirely free of cost their MBBS or PDS programs. They also give you 80k stipend per month.
The biggest opportunity in this program is that your merit does not calculate as MDCAT test. If you fulfill basic eligibility requirement i.e, 70% marks in FSC, you got recommend for this course. AFNS stands for Armed Forces Nursing Services specially designed for females. This course is announced once in a year, usually registration from July to August. How to Apply Army Nursing Course AFNS?
>> You can apply for AFNS either online or through AS&RCS center. For candidate visit their official website and search “career” in the right top corner of navigation menu.
>> Scroll down and find “Armed Forces Nursing Services”, click on “Apply Now” button. This will forwarded you to the registration form filling page.
>> Read instruction and fill out registration form like input your personal detail, academic record and family detail carefully.

2. Initial Process of Selection:
Written Test/Initial Intelligence Test
After the registration process, the first big step to join Pak army is initial intelligence test. This is an intelligence assessment taken online on a computer. Students who apply for the PMA Long Course, Technical Cadet Course, Army Medical Cadet Course and Army Nursing Course must be skilled in using computers. Keep in mind that this written test has divided into three parts, we will discuss it by following:
>>1. Verbal Intelligence Test: This is the first section of test includes several types of questions to determine more aspects of verbal reasoning. Most students asking me what types of questions includes? Generally this includes Analogies, Synonyms or Antonyms, Sentence completion, Word relationships, Comprehension questions, Odd one out and Jumbled words. The main object to conduct this test is to check the mental ability, quick thinking or what command in language. The time given for the Verbal Intelligence Test in the Pakistan Army is usually around 30 minutes. In order to pass this part, students must practice these types of questions through online attempts more quiz, this will help your speed and accuracy. Thus, the chances of selection increase.
>>2. Non-Verbal Intelligence Test: This is the 2nd portion of test includes problem solving figure type questions to determine candidates ability. The test is different from verbal intelligence test as it doesn’t include language or words. It uses shapes, patterns or images. Students have to find missing shapes to complete shape, what pattern next to complete series as well as choose right image part to make image. According to past papers, this test involve pattern recognition, figure classification, analogies with shapes, series completion, mirror images, embedded figures, matrix problems and constructions of shapes.
>>3. Academics Test: This is the 3rd and last test includes several key subjects that are important for military training. The main goal of the test is to determine how much grip candidates have in his subjects that he studied. Questions that includes in academic test from main subjects such as Mathematics, English, Islamic Studies, Pakistan Studies and also asks from General Knowledge or Current Affairs. So, students needs to prepare well to pass in a good marks.
IMP Notes// The total questions in Verbal Intelligence and Non-Verbal Intelligence test is about (85 to 100 MCQs). While in academic test, this is only 40 MCQs.
Keep in mind that time is limited to take the test. If you pass the verbal test, then you can take the next test, ie Non-Verbal. If you pass non verbal test, you can take the academic test. If you successful in all tests you can see on the computer screen “Congratulations“, while fail you see “Better Luck Next Time” that means you didn’t qualify. Initial Intelligence test is also known as screening test.
Initial Medical Test:
Pak army goes your initial medical test whether you fulfill their require medical standard. There are following health checks in this test includes:
>>1. Height and Weight Measurement: This test is taken to check your height and weight whether you fulfill their requirements or not. You height should be their min requirement as 5 feet 4 inches. While your weight will be calculated according to your age.
>>2. Eye Sight Test: Candidates should have a min vision of 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in other eye.
>>3. Flat Feet: Usually flat feet checks through physical examination. A Captain Doctor will visually analyze the feet for flatness or any abnormalities in the arch. Candidates with flat feet could not qualify this test.
>>4. Arms Angle: The purpose to conduct this test is to check that the candidate’s arms are normal and also check their shoulders alignment. They will be asked to perform movements such as lifting the arms or rotating them to ensure full range of motion and functionality.
>>5. Knee-Knocking: Usually a captain doctor takes this test. They will be asked candidates to stand straight with their feet together. The examiner checks which candidates knees touch each other or not. Those candidates who’s knee touch each other will not qualify for this test.
IMP Notes// If you want to qualify these test you should prepare for this before this test. Exercise and eat a healthy diet, and watch helpful videos on social media to prepare for each test.
Physical Test:
Initial Physical Test is the 2nd test, candidates who passed/qualify in the initial intelligence test are eligible for Physical test. This test is also necessary for all candidates who’s want to join Pak Army. It’s a men physical fitness test. The main object to conduct it to check physical strongness of candidates. This test usually includes:
>>1. Running (1 mile): Running is the 1st test in physical test. Candidates are required to run a distance of 1.6km (1 mile). The time limit to complete this run is typically 8 minutes.
>>2. Push-Ups: After running 1 mile, the successful candidates must pass 2nd test. Everyone perform 15 Push-ups within a time limit of two minutes.
>>3. Sit-Ups: Candidates are requires to complete 18 to 20 sit ups within one minute.
>>4. Chin Up: The next physical test is to perform at least 8 to 12 chin ups.
>>5. Ditch Crossing: It is the last physical fitness test in Pak army. All candidates must perform a ditch crossing of 7 feet 4 inches in length with a 4 feet in depth.
IMP Note// All dear candidates keep in mind that you can pass easily all these tests. Practice makes a man perfect. So, You have to practice regular physical test if you want to get success.
Initial Interview:
This is the last test of initial interview. The main object of initial interview is to observe a candidates personality background and also check his confidence. They will be asked the questions about candidate biography, why you join us, general knowledge and current affairs questions, bahavioral questions, situational questions, personal attributes and more. It depends on interviewers.
IMP Notes// Only shortlisted candidates qualify in interview. Only these candidates are recommended for ISSB. If you want to qualify interview, you need to get good marks in initial intelligence test, be positive and maintain confidence in front of interviewers. Usually 2 to 3 army ranked officers may conduct interview, one of them is psychologist.
3. Final Selection (ISSB):
ISSB stands for Inter Services Selection Board. It was established in 1952, it’s an institution of Pakistan that is responsible for selecting the fit candidate to serve as commissioned officer for armed forces such as Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Airforce. So, it is clear that if you want to join Pakistan Army you must be qualified from ISSB.
It is the last and final step of armed forces. Students asked me question that What type of test ISSB Include? Following are the tests taken in Inter Services Selection Board to examine candidates secret abilities. ISSB is the institutional based, conducted by following person:
- Deputy President
- Group Testing Officer (GTO)
- Psychologist
The ISSB is like a voting system, and a candidate only requires to obtain one vote from above persons. The selection technique followed by the ISSB is the three dimensional. So, you can say Deputy President, GTO or Psychologist are specialists in their respective fields, they administer these test. After clearing these tests, you will be recommended to join Pak Army as a commissioned officer & will be called for training at Pakistan Military Academy Kakul.
Above three officers are the selectors of ISSB and their duty to examine the candidates and select to the GHQ. Candidates have the essential capabilities to successfully finish their course of training at the military academies, physical, mental, social and dynamic qualities to make successful leaders during peace and war. After clearing these tests
>>1. Psychological Tests:
These tests are taken by Psychologist. It include intelligence and personality test that are held on the morning of the first day. He approach of the candidate is filtered through following test.
- Sentence completion test in Urdu: 15 to 20 incomplete sentence in Urdu are to be filled by the candidate within limited time.
- Sentence completion test in English: 15 to 20 incomplete sentence in English are to be filled in by the candidate within limited time.
- Word Association Test in English: 50 to 100 words are played on projector, the time gap b/w two word is 9 to 10 sec. So, the candidate have to make sentences within a time.
- Story Writing In English: Candidates will be asked to write 4 stories.
- Picture Story Writing: Picture are displayed on the projector for 30 seconds and you have to think the story and write story within 3 minutes.
The purpose of short time is to calculate the actual mental approach of the candidate. Be positive and do not think negative or write down any negative sentence such as kill, murder, accident, death or adult in psychological test.
>>2. Group Testing Officer (GTO):
Generally this will conduct on 2nd day, All candidates are divided in groups atleast 6 or maximum 9. The main aim of these test is to examine the abilities of coordination, team working and leadership qualities. In this test self confidence and behavior of the candidate is examined by GTO.
Group Planning:
In this test the problem is on a model is explained by GTO and candidate have to solve the problem within the time limit. Candidate can discuss it with each other.
Progressive Group Task:
In this test your group will have to complete the given task which is the combination of 3 tasks. Time for this task is 40 minutes. So, be active and participant in planning and give your views to complete the task and try to impress other members of your group.
Command Task:
Third task taken by GTO is command task. In this test the group of candidates has given a task in specified area and one of them is appointed as commander and they have to pass through an area having hurdles and outbound area. All candidates are appointed as commander one by one according to their chest number.
Half Command Task:
In this task the group is divided into two sub groups and this time no one is commander and candidates have to pass through specified area also having hurdles and outbound area.
Final Task:
Its a final task, in this task no one is commander and group is combined again and job is same as above, but you have to speak in English in this task.
Individual Obstacles:
In this test, candidates have to pass through 9 obstacles within a given time.
A Light Interview By GTO:
When a candidate is appointed as commander, GTO takes a light interview of candidate including questions about his activities, education, Intelligence and family background. Sometimes this interview is same as the deputy president interview.
In order to get vote from GTO, always cooperate with your fellows and don’t be a part of leg pulling and imposing your suggestions and orders on your fellows. As you may know forces symbolize unity and collaboration.
>>3. Final Interview by Deputy President:
Usually, final interview is taken by Deputy President. Interview includes questions about family background, education, intelligence, mathematics and general knowledge and quick response.
Final selection of the candidates is made by president base on the report of Psychologist, GTO and Deputy President. He is the head of particular ISSB where candidates is called for tests and interviews. If you are successful in all these steps then you are sent an appointment letter from Pakistan Military Academy, where you are trained and after completion of training you are given military rank and sent to army.
